Occult Evolutionary Biology: the Magic Way of Becoming God

When asked why the layman should be interested  ”in so esoteric a subject as evolutionary biology,” one of the leading evolutionists of our day, Professor S.J. Gould responded:

“Because it tells us where we came from, how we got here, and perhaps where we are going. Quite simply, it is science’s version of Roots, except it is the story of us all.”   (The Religious Nature of Evolution Theory and its Attack on Christianity, John G. Leslie and Charles K. Pallaghy, Ph.D, creation.com)

Gould candidly admits that evolutionary biology is an esoteric story of man while the prominent defender of Darwinism, the evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900-1975) spoke of God as creating through evolution, which he describes evolution as a light,

“…. which illuminates all facts, a trajectory which all lines of thought must follow.”  (Dobzhansky, T., Ayala, F.J., Stebbins, G.L. and Valentine, J.W., Evolution, W.H. Freeman and Co., San Francisco, 1977)

Western esotericism, or occultism, is the search for and study of an unseen reality.  It is secret knowledge of the hidden.   This hidden or arcane knowledge is meant only for certain people such as Gould, Dobzhansky and like-minded evolutionary esotericists.

Occult practices include but are not limited to Hermetic magic, alchemy, astrology, divination, and spiritualism, or contact with spirits.  Interpretation of occultism and its concepts can be found in philosophies, occult sciences (evolutionary biology) and nature religions such as  ancient Egyptian Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Theosophy, Wicca, Satanism, Thelema and neo-paganism.

A general definition is offered by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke:

"Occultism has its basis in a religious way of thinking, the roots of which stretch back into antiquity and which may be described as the Western esoteric tradition. Its principal ingredients have been identified as Gnosticism, the Hermetic treatises on alchemy and magic, Neo-Platonism, and the Kabbalah, all originating in the eastern Mediterranean area during the first few centuries AD." (The Occult Roots of Nazism, Good-Rick-Clarke, p. 17)

In this light, evolutionary biology is hidden knowledge (gnosis) based in a philosophy of naturalism..  Its genesis account holds that billions of years ago chemicals generated by a Big Bang which a God may or may not have generated, combined and transcended themselves after a hundred or a thousand identical operations thereby allowing the miraculous transmutation of chemicals into life.   Once life miraculously emerged, natural processes, which God may or may not play a role in,  were set in motion that after passage of vast ages supposedly eventuated in the arrival of man:

If man has arrived at his present state as a result of natural processes rather than a supernatural will, he can learn to control these processes…The concept of evolution, which is now basic to the life sciences, has provided new and in some ways revolutionary answers to questions men have been asking for centuries. The two most important of these are, ‘Why am I here, what is the purpose of human existence, and what is the nature of the world of life that surrounds us?”   (Dobzhansky, T., Ayala, F.J., Stebbins, G.L. and Valentine, J.W., Evolution, W.H. Freeman and Co., San Francisco, 1977)

Like its' Mystery Religion counterpart, evolutionary biology has both an exoteric or outer meaning for mass consumption and a hidden, or occult meaning for higher initiates.

Lurking beneath the idea that life will eventually arise from the mixing of lifeless chemicals (matter) is a vision arising from the age-old technology of alchemy while behind Dobzhansky’s phrase, the “light of evolution,” lies its magical meaning: "As above, so below" the Hermetic principle bespeaking an unseen universal life force emanating or evolving in waves from the hidden dimension of true reality above (i.e., Brahman, Quantum Void, Dobzhansky's God) with which everything in the universe and the physical dimension here below are in continuity.

Within the Egyptian Mysteries, this hidden life force was known as serpent power.  Serpent power was associated with the elemental forces (spirits) in play before creation of the universe, thus Herme's world famous magic formula is represented by the hidden great chain of being symbolized by the Oroboros.  As a powerful occult symbol, the Ouroboros means the seething power, universal life force, creative and/or evolutionary impulse or energy of the serpent figuratively depicted as either a serpent or dragon eating its own tail.

Hermes formula demonstrates the monistic oneness of the god-man's divine intellect with the  hidden reality above.  In teaching the meaning of the formula to his son Tat he said:

The intellect, O Tat, is drawn from the very substance of God.  In men, this intellect is God, and so some men are gods and their humanity is near to divinity…If man makes right use of (God’s gifts), he differs in no way from the immortals.”  (God and the Knowledge of Reality, Thomas Molnar, p. 78)

The serpent powered chain of being with its' multiple dimensions and life-giving energy systems is a hidden reality that not only powers the universe but reaches into and miraculously bestows life upon lifeless chemicals.  Then after billions of years of evolutionary process it reaches into the psyche, stirring imagination, bringing intellectual and moral perfection (deification) and psychic powers and even awakening pre-human memories of when scientifically enlightened modern man, evolution's most advanced product, was a soulless hominid.

Dr. Molnar writes that illustrations of Hermetic science abound all around the world.  For example, the “Asclepius,” a famous Gnostic text of indefinite origin states,

Man is a magnum miraculum…as though himself God….familiar with the race of demons, of the same origin as he; he despises that part of his nature which is only human, for he has put his hope in the divinity of the other part.” (ibid, p. 78)

It was Renaissance scholars, theologians, and mystics who rediscovered and intensely studied ancient esoteric texts, and then like Pico della Mirandola, argued that occult Cabala and hermetic science is the best proof of the divinity of Christ.    In other words, said Molnar,

“..by the time of the Renaissance the esoteric texts of the first centuries A.D. had acquired in scholarly and humanist circles an unparalleled prestige, confronting as equals the texts held sacred by the church.  In Pico’s estimation, ‘nulla est scientia que nos magis certificet de divinitate Christ quam magia et Cabala’ (there is no science that would prove for us Christ’s divinity better than magic and the Cabala.”  (ibid, pp. 78-79)

Occult science and manipulation by the magician of arcane symbols, numerals, formulas, and knowledge pertaining to the hidden dimension of true reality are inseparably linked in esoteric doctrines.  Therefore, in order for divinity to be proven by way of occult science, the modern Hermetic magician, whether secular or Christian, must manipulate into irrelevance the supernatural dimension and the literal and historic meaning of the Genesis account of creation ex nihilo since 'matter' must either pre-exist or have come into being from a Cosmic Egg (Big Bang).  In either scenario the action of the magician results in,

....an absolute although hidden concordance between the lower and the higher worlds, the key of which lends to the magus incalculable powers.” (Salvation through Technology: Creating A Posthuman New Breed, Dr. Martin Erdmann, herescopeblogspot.com, April 23, 2011)

One of the primary goals of the Hermetic magician said Molnar, is separation of the soul from the body (purification), and second, the spiritualization of all matter.     Darwin’s formula supposedly attains the first goal:

“….the doctrine of evolution has swept the world, not on the strength of its scientific merits, but precisely in its capacity as a Gnostic myth. It affirms, in effect, that living things created themselves, which is in essence a metaphysical claim….Thus…evolutionism is a metaphysical doctrine decked out in scientific garb….it is a scientistic myth (that) implicitly denies the transcendent origin of being; for indeed, only after the living creature has been speculatively reduced to an aggregate of particles does Darwinist transformism become conceivable.”  ( Dr. Wolfgang Smith in From Old Gnosticism to New Age I, Alan Morrison, SCP Journal Vol. 28:4-29:1, 2005, pp. 30-31)

The magic way of intellectual and moral transcendence (deification) was made possible by the inventers of theories of spiritual/cosmic evolution.   Molnar writes that travelers on this second highway were characteristically recruited from theology.  Some of these inventers are,

Bergson, Laberthonniere, Le Roy, Blondel, Bloch, Teilhard de Chardin, Heidegger, Bultmann, Karl Rahner, and numerous others…”  (God and the Knowledge of Reality, p. 133)

With Teilhard’s mystical pantheist idea, after billions of years of evolution, matter finally transcended itself resulting in its' transmutation into Christ consciousness.   Now that matter is spiritualized and divine,

The great affair for modern mankind is to break its way out by forcing some threshold of greater consciousness.” Christians should not fear the natural processes of evolution because it brings them inexorably to God and self-deification, “Though frightened for a moment by evolution, the Christian now perceives that what it offers him is…a magnificent means of (being) at one with God…”    (Genesis, Creation, and Early Man, Fr. Seraphim Rose, p. 590)

Occult Worldview Essentials

The basic foundations of occult worldviews consistently teach the following elements:

1. Monism and evolution: Though there are different forms of monism the common denominator of them all is the idea that the universe and everything in it consists of or is reducible to one substance in process of evolution. (The Coming Darkness, John Ankerberg & John Weldon)

Mystical forms of monism characteristically accept some form of pantheism, as exemplified by for example, Teilhard de Chardin's Hindu pantheist New Religion and Leonard Sweet's Quantum Spirituality based in Teilhard's conceptions. Advaita Hinduism teaches the one ultimate reality is Nirguna Brahman (an impersonal God-force or Void) while Teilhard's system reduces everything to Omega---his version of Brahman.

It is the hidden monistic premise of esoteric evolutionary biology and mystical occult monism that makes them fundamentally anti-Christian and anti-person since man is not created in the spiritual image of the One God in three Persons but is rather an impersonal aspect of the one substance.

In Dr. Gary North's excellent evaluation of monism, "Unholy Spirits: Occultism and New Age Humanism," he writes that the Word of God teaches a permanent,

"....unbridgeable gap between the ultimate being of God and the derivative being of creatures. There is a Creator-creature distinction (meaning that) men do not partake of God's being...they are not of the same substance as God. There is no more fundamental doctrine than this one. Significantly, in every form of occultism this principle is denied....Satan's old temptation to man hinges on his denial and man's denial of the Creator-creature distinction."  (ibid, pp. 59-61)

2. God is an impersonal hidden reality, an energy field, abyss or void as opposed to God as personal and loving. (John 3:16)

3. Man's true identity is God since he is one with (shares) God's being as opposed to man created in God's image but not sharing the being of God. (Gen. 1:27)

4. Since there is only one impersonal substance, then evil is in harmony with the amoral god-substance or force. In contrast, Scripture teaches that evil operates in opposition to God's holy nature. (1 Peter 1:14, 15; 3:12)

5. Illumination or enlightenment (salvation) is achieved through self-realization (awareness of personal divinity) by various occult spiritist practices such as séances, spells, automatic writing, meditation, hypnosis, Ouija boards, shamanic drumming, Kundalini yoga, channeling, visualization, and mind-altering drugs. Occult salvation is the antithesis of salvation based on the atonement (Christ's suffering and death for sin) and received as a free gift by grace through faith in God and Christ. (John 3:16; 5:24; 6:47; 17:3)

6. Psychic or spiritual powers result from initiation into occult practices (see above) that open the mind to contact with and even possession by spirits.

In contrast, Scripture teaches that spiritual gifts are distinct from and work in opposition to occult psychic powers. They are given by God to His people for service to others. ( 1 Cor. 12:4-11; 14:3)

7. Eternal cyclic incarnation into different bodies over thousands or millions of years or reabsorption (annihilation and/or personal extinction) into the impersonal substance. In opposition, Scripture teaches personal physical resurrection and immortality in either heaven or hell. (Matthew 25:46)

8. A Pelagian view of humanity. Human nature is not fallen but good, thus the possibility for perfection is always present.  Given this outlook, the self-transcendence of humanity becomes a sociological imperative:

At the stage we have reached in scientific research our minds and intelligence will have to surpass themselves and rise to transcendent heights; the human, all-too human, will no longer suffice.” (Mircea Eliade, The Forge and the Crucible: The Origins and  Structures of Alchemy,  Dr. Erdmann)

In monism, whether esoteric evolutionary biology or mystical occult pantheist permutations, the traditional Western Christian ways of thinking and perceiving are rejected because "all is one."  This means there is no ultimate distinction between man and God, Jesus Christ and Satan, male and female, human and nonhuman, true and false, good and evil, moral and immoral, holy and unholy, or right and wrong because "true reality" is beyond the illusory categories associated with the natural (physical) world. Therefore, murder, genocide, rape, sodomy, pederasty, pedophilia, lying, cheating and theft cannot be considered evil if evil itself is in harmony with the hidden true reality.

Equally, while nothing can really be considered evil, so nothing can really be considered good. This means that honesty, integrity, courage, fidelity, and commitment cannot be considered good and worthy for the same reason evil cannot be considered evil.

Finally, there is no such thing as personhood (genuine personality) because true reality (the one substance) is not personal.  In other words, because the One God in three Persons who made all men in His spiritual image, thereby endowing all men with genuine personality(personhood) is not true reality, then ideas of personhood and unalienable rights are delusional.  In fact, since personality is supposedly a hindrance to occult spiritual enlightenment, it must be destroyed.

Humanist rationalism, Hermetic magic, esoteric Cabala, alchemy, Buddhism, reincarnation and karma, naturalism  and other forms of occultism were two sides of the same revival of Renaissance paganism and mystical pantheism underlying the intellectual edifice of modern natural science and evolutionary biology. Thus, as C.S. Lewis argued in his great masterpiece, That Hideous Strength, occultism and humanistic rationalism are not enemies in principle but rather cooperating philosophies that are united against the supernatural God in three Persons, Christianity and Christian civilization.

Lewis underscores this point in “The Abolition of Man:”

“You will even find people who write about the sixteenth century as if Magic were a medieval survival and Science the new thing that came in to sweep it away. Those who have studied the period know better. There was very little magic in the Middle Ages: the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are the high noon of magic. The serious magical endeavour and the serious scientific endeavour are twins: one was sickly and died, the other strong and throve. But they were twins. They were born of the same impulse. I allow that some (certainly not all) of the early scientists were actuated by a pure love of knowledge. But if we consider the temper of that age as a whole we can discern the impulse of which I speak.”

In conclusion, evolutionary biology symbolizes the deep religious desires of certain men for autonomous self-creation, transcendence and self-redemption, thus are incarnations,

“ …of the ancient, deeply religious endeavor “to become like God” – infinitely wise, omnipotent, autonomous, and immortal.” (Dr. Erdmann)
