As with Francis Schaeffer, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus is a modern-day Jeremiah. In his book, “American Babylon,” he challenges the Christian faithful to be the best of citizens yet never forget that they are pilgrims in a foreign land, traveling toward their eternal home.
With the resurrection of Jesus said Neuhaus, a genuinely new world order had been inaugurated, and the faithful,
“…are on the way…on the pilgrim way toward the City of God…..sustained on the way by faith’s embrace of the presence in time of the End Time, who is the Alpha and Omega, the logos of all that has been, is now, and ever shall be. We are moving toward our destination, and our destination is moving toward us.” (American Babylon, Richard John Neuhaus, p. 250)
For those whose primary allegiance is to the City of God, every country, though foreign, is nevertheless a homeland and every homeland a foreign country—a worldly system.
Though America is our homeland, and as the prophet Jeremiah says, its welfare is our welfare, America is also a foreign country that like every worldly system is Babylon. This particular Babylon is the place of our pilgrimage through time toward paradise, the City of God. (1 Peter 2:11)
Babylon is life in the realm of what Saint Augustine calls libido dominandi—-the realm of the earthly city of natural man ruled by pride and a will turned toward evil, hence idolatrous lust for power, self-glorification and self-gratification at the expense of everyone else.
In this world, no matter how promising a civilization appears at its start, it inevitably ends in libido dominandi—in Babylon.
At it’s founding, America for example, was lauded as the freest most morally enlightened society ever known by man. The secret to its success lay in its’ firm grounding in the eternally unchanging Higher Things of the living God Who Revealed Himself to man in Jesus Christ. This means for example the personhood of man created in the spiritual image of the One God in three Persons and enduring Permanent truths which are sometimes called natural law or the first principles of ethics. In the Declaration of Independence they are called the laws of nature and nature’s God as well as unalienable rights predicated upon man as God's spiritual image bearer. Our unalienable right to life, for instance, derives from the divine nature of man's creation, hence, "Thou shalt not kill:"
"....murder is once for all forbidden; so even the child in the womb, while yet the mother's blood is still being drawn on to form the human being, it is not lawful to destroy. To forbid birth is only quicker murder. It makes no difference whether one take away the life once born or destroy it as it comes to birth. He is a man, who is to be a man, the fruit is always present in the seed." (Church Father Tertullian, Apologeticus IX.- 6, 8)
There is more guilt attached to Christians who abort babies:
"...the practice of abortion by Christians is spiritual prostitution to an idol, defiles God's sanctuary and profanes His holy name. God alone is the Author of life and it is not the creature's prerogative to question the Creator's wisdom in bringing to life a fellow human being at conception. Whenever men disregard their Creator's wise judgment by destroying His innocent creation, they are serving another god. They are, in fact, spiritually prostituting themselves to the idolatrous self whom they believe is wiser in its value judgments." (Abortion and the Ancient Practice of Child Sacrifice, Andrew White, MD, 1/5/2012, Associates for Biblical Research)
In Christian thought, a person is a spirit and personality is the total individuality of the spirit. Without spirit there is no person. The term 'person' originated in Christian theologies developmental struggle to comprehend the nature and experience of the supernatural Triune God:
"The derivative concept of human personhood is a gift of the Christian faith to culture…” (Stephen P. Stratton, Chapter 14, p. 247, The Self, Paul Vitz & Susan M. Felch, Editors)
Whether the Founders were individually Christian or not, there was among them a strong Christian consensus that as all human beings are persons created as spiritual equals in the eyes of God, then life, property, worth, dignity and other unalienable rights from God are conferred upon each person at conception. For example freedom of religion and speech are the temporal manifestations of a person’s God-given spiritual property of conscience and reason while a person is uniquely free because his spirit can spiritually transcend the physical matter of his own body to access the supernatural dimension as Paul affirms:
"Now the Lord is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (2 Cor. 3:17)
The Constitution therefore, recognizes the divine nature of man's creation, that man is a person endowed by his personal Creator with spiritual property, a divine right to life and liberty, and the means of acquiring and possessing property. Hence our Republic recognizes Law is unchangeable because our Creator (John 1:1) is the unchanging Lawgiver Who is the same today as yesterday and for all eternity:
"It is sufficiently obvious, that persons and property are the two great subjects on which Governments are to act; and that the rights of persons, and the rights of property, are the objects, for the protection of which Government was instituted. These rights cannot well be separated." (James Madison, Speech at the Virginia Convention, December 2, 1829)
In "Property," published in The National Gazette on March 29, 1792, James Madison clearly defines the meaning of a person’s God-given spiritual property, some of its’ temporal manifestations and the meaning and intent of just government as opposed to unjust government:
"He has a property....in his religious opinions, and in the profession and practice dictated by them." "He has a property...in his opinions and the free communication of them." "He has an equal property in the free use of his faculties and free choice of the objects on which to employ them." "He has property very dear to him in the safety and liberty of his person."
"....a man's land, or merchandize, or money (and) as a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights. Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties or his possessions."
Government is instituted to protect property of every sort:
"This being the end of government, that alone is a just government, which impartially secures to every man, whatever is his own." (Samuel Rutherford, Lex Rex; lexrex.com)
Vishal Mangalwadi, India's foremost Christian scholar affirms that the Christian gift of personhood gave birth to the "belief in the unique dignity of human beings," and this is,
"...the force that created Western civilization, where citizens do not exist for the state but the state exists for the individuals. Even kings, presidents, prime ministers, and army generals cannot be allowed to trample upon an individual and his or her rights." (Truth and Transformation: A Manifesto for Ailing Nations, pp. 12-13)
But over time, those for whom 'self' reigns supreme managed to throw down the Higher Things--the spiritual foundations of our Constitutional Republic--and trample them into the mud. (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15 )
The beginning of idolatry is pride, which together with selfishness demonstrates preference for one's self instead of God and neighbor (and unwanted babies), and just as no violation of the Law can occur without one first being an idolater, envy/covetousness and murder are its' final results, for where 'self' is primary then 'self' deserves everything it can get, no matter the cost to other people.
With the negation of Permanent truths by idolaters came the downward-spiraling transformation of America from the freest most enlightened society into another worldly Babylon, a contemporary version of decadent, idolatrous Rome as it was collapsing and dying during the days of Jesus Christ.
This means that in the absence of an unchanging foundation of Truth and Moral Law, there is no right way or wrong way, thus the answer to the question "Will Gay Bars and Bathhouses Become National Monuments?" (Associated Press May 29, 2014) is yes because after more than eighty years of pagan evolutionary evangelization in the schools, media, seminaries, academia and elsewhere, a generation of morally-debauched politicians, educators, law-makers, theologians and typical high school graduates no longer believes that anyone knows ‘the’ truth or even can know whether males are just males or females too. For them, anyone who claims to know the truth or speaks of Special Creation is a bigoted fundamentalist because he knows that human beings were never created but evolved. What this means to Babylon's new 'gods'---the conscious products of the 'god' Evolution like Jeremy Rifkin is that,
"Evolution is no longer viewed as a mindless affair, quite the opposite. It is mind enlarging its domain up the chain of species." The god Evolution is the “universe...a mind that oversees, orchestrates, and gives order and structure to all things." (Algeny, Jeremy Rifkin, 1983, p. 188)
Now that dictatorial scientism and the 'god' Evolution reign supreme, Babylon's gods and goddesses no longer feel like guests,
”..... in someone's else's home and therefore obliged to make our behavior conform with a set of pre-existing cosmic rules. It is our creation now. We make the rules. We establish the parameters of reality. We create the world, and because we do, we no longer feel beholden to outside forces. We no longer have to justify our behavior, for we are now the architects of the universe. We are responsible to nothing outside ourselves. for we are the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.” (ibid)
Evil and Babylon go together like a dung beetle on its pile just the same as killing unwanted, inconvenient human life because reality is inside the skull's of Babylon's man-gods and goddesses. Since covetous narcissists make up the rules they decide who can have and who cannot and who can live and who is not worthy of life, therefore property owners like Bundy whose ranch is coveted and inconvenient unborn humans are high on the hit list.
Writing in, "New York Abortion Bill Allows Shooting Babies Through the Heart With Poison to Kill Them" Steven Ertelt reports that New York is already the abortion/murder capital of the United States, with practically no oversight of the industry. Throughout the second trimester, developing babies can be completely dismembered,
"... even when they can feel pain (by) pulling the baby out piece by piece until the mother’s uterus is empty. After the abortion, the abortionist must reassemble the child’s body to ensure nothing has been left inside the child’s mother." (LifeNews.com | 5/20/14 6:28 PM)
What loveless narcissists are demanding now for late-term abortions and which will be legalized in New York by the holocaust-expanding Women’s Equality Act, is the murder of babies,
"... by sliding a needle filled with a chemical agent, such as digoxin, into the beating heart, before being delivered."
Dismembering babies and disposing of them like so much garbage is common practice in America's Babylon where lying is common place, children are routinely initiated into the realms of darkness and unwanted human life is an imposition upon growing legions of evil-minded self-lovers who now say dismemberment does not go far enough. What is now coveted is for fully developed baby's to be lethally injected through their hearts. And why not? With the death of the One God in three Persons, immutable truth and moral law died along with personhood, thus human life is nothing more than a product of evolution that can be exploited, enslaved and destroyed because all things are now permissible.
Thus Fr. Neuhaus observes that in Rome’s modern counterpart, the American Babylon, it is a mark of hyper-sophistication among the scientifically enlightened to echo the question of the worldly Pontius Pilate,
“What is truth?” (p. 81)
Pilate was a forerunner of the amoral Ruling Class sophists, who for the most part, are our politicians, jurists, entertainers, news media, apostate theologians, and other so-called “scientifically enlightened sophisticates” of today.
In “The Ruling Class: How They Corrupted America and What We Can Do About It,” Angelo M. Codevilla, emeritus professor of international relations at Boston University, describes America's 'new' oligarchy as a left-right Ruling Class consisting of self-anointed superior pagan snobs who dominate both political parties, academe, media, Hollywood, science, the economy, military and all culture shaping and information disseminating institutions. ' New' Babylonians have infiltrated seminaries, preach heresy from pulpits, run our schools and big business and imagine themselves entitled to reshape an America they regard as composed of un-evolved hominids.
The Ruling Class consist of god-men and goddesses who pray,
"... to themselves as saviors of the planet and as shapers of mankind in their own image," (The Ruling Class: How They Corrupted America and What We Can Do About It, p. xix)
Codevilla argues that America’s real war is between this self-designated Ruling Class and a,
“...whole America composed of people who are really inferior to no one, and who do not feel represented by either of the major political parties, who realize that the country’s major institutions are now in the hands of persons who look down on them...” (10 Questions with the Ruling Class Author Angelo M. Codevilla, DailyCaller.com, 9/12/2010)
According to Codevilla, the Ruling Class dictate that evolutionary science trumps the Authoritative Word of God, and that they themselves, as the ultimate products of the dark ‘god’ Evolution are science’s authoritative enlightened priests. Thus their mendacious objectives are legitimized by arbitrarily anointed expositors of "evolutionary science gnosis" (metaphysical sophistry) in what has become a 'scientific dictatorship' where evolutionary thinking is entrenched in the American consciousness even more than it was in the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. This why an aggressive slash and burn operation is being conducted against Special Creation in favor of evolutionary cosmologies such as the Big Bang and multiverse speculations.
In the Roman Babylon, Jesus Christ prayed an intercessory prayer for His disciples shortly before His crucifixion and death at the hands of Romes “enlightened sophisticates.” Within the prayer are important references dealing with the relation of the Christian faithful to the worldly systems around them:
“I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.” (John 17:6)
This means that the faithful have been called out of the world, meaning that though they must necessarily live within Babylon, they are not a part of it and must not conform their minds, words, or deeds to its’ systems (i.e., evolutionary thinking) and apostatizing, worldly churches now that they belong to Christ whom the world continues to crucify daily, thus Jesus said:
“I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (v. 14).”
In other words, if they are truly faithful to Christ (John 1:1) and to the Word He has given them they will be rejected, hated, ridiculed and resented by worldly 'Christians' and Babylonians.
In demonstration of this truth, the American Babylon and its’ evolutionary-pagan church daily accuse the faithful of bigotry, intolerance, homophobia, hate, rigid unbending thinking, as well as the heresy of being anti-science and anti-evolution due to the faithful’s steadfast refusal to accept and conform Special Creation (six day Genesis account of creation) to evolutionary conceptions.
As the wrath of the American Babylon intensifies, as it surely will, the suffering faithful are to hold fast to the Rock of Truth, to persevere because Christ has sent them into the world as His witnesses:
“As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world . . . that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. . . . I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me” (vv. 18, 21, 23).
This being the case, we are to remember at all times said Fr. Neuhaus, that the faithful live between times—between the time of the new world inaugurated in the death and resurrection of Jesus and that new world consummated in his return to establish the Kingdom of God. (p 119)
The faithful are pilgrims, exiles in an American Babylon that is nevertheless their homeland. And as the faithful “await the vindication of their hope,” said Fr. Neuhaus, they must persevere and whenever and wherever possible be as salt and light in the American Babylon, for as the prophet Jeremiah says, “its welfare is our welfare.” (p. 119)
Fr. Neuhaus calls the attention of the faithful to our Lords promise at the very end of the very last book of the Bible:
"Look, I am coming soon! Says the Lord. My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star." (Rev. 22:12-16)
To which all the saints respond:
“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (p. 250)
