by Bobby Tallhorse Time to Heat Up Your Faith! Are you a Christian? If so, are you hot, cold or lukewarm? Think I'm nuts for asking? God refers to all three in Revelation, chapter 3. In talking to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans, (Rev. 3:15) I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. (Rev. 3:16) So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
What does God mean by these 2 verses? I can only tell you what I think God is trying to tell Christians. It is my opinion and on a scholarly level I must say I read the Bible like a child would, I take the Bible at its word..I try not to add or subtract..each word means what it means.
I believe God is telling Christians that it is easy to set in the pew every Sunday. It is hard to put the guidance of the Bible into reality in your everyday life. Example: In Romans 13:9 It says..Thou shalt not kill. People automatically think that all instances of killing apply here. I was taught that kill here means to lie in wait, murder. War has killing. This does not apply to that. But, a hot issue that kill does refer to is abortion. If you are a Christian and you don't think abortion is right, but you are unwilling to let people know that, you my friend are lukewarm.
At the end of chapter 3 in Revelation, (Rev. 3:22) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. God made a point of telling us to pay attention to the words that were spoken to these churches. Back then they were already cooling off and not paying attention to God's will. We have been warned here that we too may be spewed out of God's mouth if we do not get our acts together as Christians and heat our faith up.
Christians are thought to HAVE to be passive. Why? Because everyone always asks what Jesus would do and everyone always says Jesus would talk or Jesus would turn the other cheek. Jesus also had a temper! Jesus was angry when he found people selling in the temple. St. John 2:14-15 says..And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and the doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a SCOURGE of SMALL CORDS, he drove them out the changers' money , and overthrew the tables; does this sound lukewarm to you?
Jesus has a temper and so does God. Times are getting hard. It's going to be hard to be a Christian. It's going to take some guts to not be a lukewarm Christian. Lukewarm means to go with the flow, don't ruffle feathers. Heating up your Christian faith means politely saying what the Bible has told you. Not being swayed to say that everything everybody does is ok. If you are a Christian, you must follow the Word of God. You must obey God's commandments.
Are you a lukewarm Christian? If you are, you have plenty of company. But, God knew us so well that He wrote to us in the Bible. Telling us NOT to be lukewarm. God was not lukewarm when He gave his only Son on the cross. Jesus was not lukewarm when He died for us.
