Why the Grinch Destroyed Christmas

"An atheist group that has paid for a large billboard outside the Lincoln Tunnel reading "You KNOW it's a Myth" says it is targeting "closet" atheists as part of its Christmas season campaign." While acknowledging "everybody has the right to believe as they see fit," David Silverman, the president of the atheist organization said his group believed there were "a lot more people" who were atheists, but feared publicly admitting it. "A lot of people in church, a lot of people in the mosque, a lot of people in the synagogue know they're praying to air," Silverman said. http://sec.floridatoday.com/article/0gBjbH81whd6E?q=Billboard

"As there is a degree of depravity in mankind which requires a certain degree of circumspection and distrust: So there are other qualities in human nature, which justify a certain portion of esteem and confidence." --James Madison, Federalist No. 55, 1788

The Founders of this nation were not fools, neither were they so proud that they could not admit to being fallen, or as Madison said, being a mixture of depravity and decency. Hence were the Founders alive today, they would not be shocked by the depravity of Silverman, who is not just a fool but an arrogantly depraved one.

Resentment is a mixture of self-love (pride) and envy and is therefore a particularly foul spiritual pathology. Silverman's resentment manifests itself through a process of annihilation, or reductionism.

First Silverman imaginatively reduces God the Father to "air." Then he imaginatively reduces the birth of Jesus Christ to a man-made "myth." And then, having conceptually annihilated the "reason for the season," he proceeds to try to destroy Christmas for everyone, most especially for children.

At a deeper level though, Silverman has freely rejected salvation through Jesus Christ, yet nevertheless wants no one else to have it either. It is at this deepest of spiritual levels that Silverman's envy is at its' most evil.

The Grinch is green precisely because he is jealous (Pride of Mind) and resentful of the Whovillian's joy, hope, faith, and salvation.

Silverman is a terrible-willed green Grinch with a Cosmic Authority problem. He cannot tolerate a Mind/Moral Authority that transcends his own willful mind and desires.

CS Lewis perceptively observed that the door to Hell is shut and locked from the inside, and this is because terrible-willed Grinches will have it no other way. In the end, says Lewis, Heaven is for those who say to their Creator, "Thy will be done." The reverse is true as well. For Hell is for those whose demand is, "My will be done." Just so.
