Justice Department: Traditional Marriage is Unconstitutional

In a stunning assault on traditional values, the Obama administration filed a legal brief claiming that the federal law defining marriage as between one man and one woman was motivated by unconstitutional bigotry. The government’s new position says the Defense of Marriage Act, signed by President Clinton, violates the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of “equal protection” because it treats heterosexual couples differently from gay couples—ignoring the fact that the Constitution promises equal treatment of individuals, not equal status for all forms of partnership. Though the president says he personally opposes gay marriage, his Attorney General equates defenders of traditional marriage with racist advocates of segregation and Jim Crow. If courts side with the Justice Department, it will cost taxpayers big money – giving gay partners new tax benefits, health coverage, and other entitlements currently reserved for married spouses.
