In his article, "The Portrayal of Creationists by Their Evolutionist Detractors," Phillip Bell notes that evolutionists, "...are often willing to resort to all manner of arguments, tactics and schemes, all of which are expressly designed to ridicule the views of Bible-believing Christians....The statements of evolutionists are a clear demonstration of their unjustified bias against the straightforward young-Earth creationist (hereafter, creationist) view, as taught in Genesis. Indeed, evolutionists are often willing to resort to all manner of arguments, tactics and schemes, all of which are expressly designed to ridicule the views of Bible-believing Christians."
Of the many evolutionists quoted by Bell are Daniel Dennet, Steven Rose, and Ernst Mayr.
Cognitive scientist and ultra-Darwinist Daniel Dennett claims that there really is no you, that soul, spirit and will are illusions caused by chemical interactions in the brain. He adds:
“The kindly God who fashioned each and every one of us (all creatures great and small) and sprinkled the sky with shining stars for our delight—that God is, like Santa Claus, a myth of childhood, not anything a sane, undeluded adult could literally believe in.†“To put it bluntly but fairly, anyone today who doubts that the variety of life on this planet was produced by a process of evolution is simply ignorant— inexcusably ignorant, in a world where three out of four people have learned to read and write.â€
Ultra-Darwinism is a mystical form of evolutionary theory that relates development not to survival of the fittest, but to the fittest genetic material. In this theory the gene is redefined as the meme, an idea, saying or ritual which propagates itself through a society in much the same way as the spread of a computer virus.
Steven Rose, a neuroscientist, is a self-professing materialist. And though a vocal critic of ultra-Darwinism he views creationists and New Age mystics as his main enemies:
“In attacking ultra-Darwinism in this way I want to make it absolutely clear that I have no intention of departing from a materialist view of life, nor of giving any ground at all to anti-Darwinian fundamentalists, creationists or New Age mystics of any shape or hue.†(ibid)
Ernst Mayr (b. 1904) is a famous evolutionary biologist and atheist, author of some of the 20th century’s most influential volumes on evolution. He was also Professor Emeritus of Zoology at Harvard University. Mayr sums up the consensus of opinion among evolutionists when he says:
“No educated person any longer questions the validity of the so-called theory of evolution, which we now know to be a simple fact.†(ibid)
At bottom, both Ultra-Darwinism and original Darwinism are grounded in materialist philosophy.
The taproot of all modern materialist teachings is ancient Egypt and Greece. Greek Atomists such as Epicurus taught that the Ultimate Substance or “all that exists†is void, energy and matter and that human beings, their intelligence and volition, are an evolved accident of chance. Everything is void, energy and matter, therefore God, first principles, eternal ideas, souls, spirits, and afterlife are absurdities. Only reason is left, but reason is active only because sensations (i.e., firing of neurons, chemical interactions) stimulate it.
While materialists claim that all that exists is matter, Eastern-influenced New Age mystics say that all that exists is prakriti. In the Hindu Vedanta and Sankhya systems the one substance is the ‘prakriti stuff’ from which the universe and all beings evolve and are in continuity with. D.L. Johnson elaborates:
“The whole of the universe…evolved out of the basic material stuff, prakriti. Prior to evolution into what things are today, matter was inert, undifferentiated, quiescent….Each individual human being is part of the cosmic process which began some time ago and will continue as a process…The human being is tied to the world of evolving matter. Each person becomes a person as part of a determined evolutionary process.†(Morris, p. 224)
Why do evolutionists fear, resent and attack Biblical creationists? The answer resides in the spiritual and religious dimension. Behind evolutionary materialism and New Age mysticism are religious worldviews providing answers to the Ultimate Questions:
Is there a God behind it all? What is evil and why does it exist? What is man? Does he have a soul and free will? Is there a purpose to life? Is there an afterlife? Is the basic human problem biological, moral, or metaphysical?
Materialists believe that evolution has made human beings bad, that our problem is biological or genetic. Matter itself is bad, and so is the God Who created matter. Biological and genetic engineers will eventually discover how to make us good by re-engineering matter. Scientists are our saviors and they will determine what we can think, say, and do. Science, experts, and technology are the keys to salvation.
Eastern-influenced New Age says our problem is metaphysical. Soul is pure but physical nature (matter) is evil. Liberation (salvation) lies in isolating soul from body and yoga is the technique for doing this.
Vishal Mangalwadi, India's foremost Christian scholar, points out that today yoga is no longer defined as isolation of soul from body but as union of soul (atman) with God (Brahma, the all that exists).
Man's problem then is not moral, as Scripture teaches. Man is not guilty of freely breaking God's Law. His problem is not sin but rather biological/genetic or metaphysical, meaning that the fall of man is into evil matter. The material body is perceived as an evil tomb from which the materialist's consciousness, or the Gnostic's divine spark or New Agers bit of spirit must escape.
Depending on whether they are materialists or New Age, salvation for the masses means either extinction upon death---no afterlife at all---or reabsorption into Brahma by whatever name. For higher initiates, salvation means evolution through initiatory steps into a god state. A current hope of Transhumanists is salvation by means of transference of consciousness into a clone. With each clone the initiate approaches a god state.
The Bible teaches that man's problem is moral and spiritual, not biological or metaphysical. The Triune God created Adam and Eve good but they chose to disobey God, thereby becoming sinners, a trait transmitted to all of us.
Though we are His tripartite spiritual-image bearers (soul/spirit/body)and capable of goodness, none of us is perfect. From childhood our tendency is toward evil. We do not need to be taught to lie, be possessive, jealous, spiteful and even hateful, all of this comes naturally. On the contrary, we must be disciplined and taught against our natural tendency toward evil. Yet despite the best training we still fail morally. Our central problem is sin. We need a Divine Savior Who will forgive our sins and transform our heart (soul/spirit)---the core of our being.
The evolutionists' hostility to Christian theism and the Genesis account of creation in particular is very specific because Christianity is the religion of the West and America. Evolutionists, whether materialist or New Age dislike and resent the supernatural power of God in their lives and since they cannot take their resentment out on God they take it out on His children in this world.
Believing they have found another avenue of salvation they foolishly brag that He does not exist, but in their night terrors and their sense of standing just above a yawning abyss, they fear He does.
