In his profoundly insightful essay, "Why Christianity Lost America?" Vishal Mangalwadi, author of "The Book That Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization," convincingly argues that, "Christianity lost America because 20th-century evangelicalism branded itself as the party of faith. Secularism (science, university, media) became the party of truth. This is one reason why 70% Christian youth give up meaningful involvement with the church when they grow up." (December 10, 2011 by Vishal Mangalwadi, revelationmovement.com)
Secular Liberalism, which is really heresy, has acquired the “Truth†brand by default said Mangalwadi, because evangelicalism began defining Church’s mission as cultivating Faith, not promoting knowledge of Truth (compare 1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Tim 2:25; Titus 1:1, etc.). This in turn gave rise to the misperception that Christianity is no more than a religion of faith completely disconnected with truth. This is tragic given that the Judeo-Christian tradition is the only reason,
"... why any medieval, modern, or postmodern person talks about “Truth†that can be stated in rational words and propositions (creeds or equations). The secular academy and science acquired the truth-brand only because Secularism is a Protestant heresy. The university exists because the Church was committed to knowing and believing truth. Secularism didn’t create the university. It obtained that Christian institution because, liberal Protestantism surrendered to Rationalism and evangelicalism abandoned the life of the mind. That enabled Secularism to walk away with the brand Truth. The fact is that secular atheism and materialism leave no room for rational/propositional truth. That is why Secularism is dogmatic about relativism." (ibid)
More than a century ago, what today is called Secular Liberalism was called Modernism by Pope Pius X who in 1907 declared it a heresy in the encyclical called ‘Pascendi Dominici Gregis’. The Pope described Modernists as the newest adversaries of the Body of Christ. They have emerged with ‘arts entirely new and full of deceit’ and 'are striving to destroy the vital energy of the Church, and, as far as in them lies, utterly to subvert the very Kingdom of Christ." (PASCENDI DOMINICI GREGIS ON THE DOCTRINE OF THE MODERNISTS, ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS X, SEPTEMBER 8, 1907 http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius10/p10pasce.htm )
As brazen audacity is their chief characteristic, Modernists easily lead the unwary into error, and there are no conclusions "of any kind from which they shrink or which they do not thrust forward with pertinacity and assurance." To this must be added the fact, "which indeed is well calculated to deceive souls" that they posture themselves as possessing, "a reputation for irreproachable morality." And so it is "all but fatal to the hope of cure that their very doctrines have given such a bent to their minds, that they disdain all authority and brook no restraint; and relying upon a false conscience, they attempt to ascribe to a love of truth that which is in reality the result of pride and obstinacy."
Modernists insist that both science and history must be atheistic and this worldly, which of course leaves no room for the living God Who exists outside the time-space universe. And as the principle doctrine of Modernism is evolution, then every religion is a living religion,
"...subject to change, and must in fact be changed (for to) the laws of evolution everything is subject under penalty of death — dogma, Church, worship, the Books we revere as sacred, even faith itself affirmed that our most holy religion, in the man Christ as in us, emanated from nature spontaneously and of itself. Nothing assuredly could be more utterly destructive of the whole supernatural order."
Furthermore, as all things, including our Lord Jesus Christ God incarnate, must be subject to the laws of evolution,
"..then Christ, according to what they call His real history, was not God and never did anything divine, and that as man He did and said only what they, judging from the time in which He lived, consider that He ought to have said or done." (ibid)
At the bottom of Modernism is secular atheism and evolutionary materialism which leave no room for rational, propositional unchanging truth. This is why Secularism is dogmatic about subjectivism, the dangerous notion that there are no right ways and no wrong ways, all directions, which can include everything from Satanism to Sharia, can lead to the same place.
In a culture that asserts that all opinions, ideas, religions, philosophies, and ideologies are the same, even Christians do not know that Hinduism, like Greco-Roman nature religions, is self-consciously based on myths and stories, said Mangalwadi:
"The Buddha rejected Hinduism’s mythical gods and goddesses in favor of mystical (non-rational) Silence." And while "Islam has words that are believed to be true. These words were uttered in a state of non-rational trance, called “prophecy.†Islam, therefore, rests on private, non-verifiable communications of an individual."
Only the Revelation of God is remarkably different:
"No one was asked to believe Moses because of his private, albeit very rational, encounter with the supernatural at the burning bush. The sign that God gave to skeptical Moses was empirically and publicly testable: “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain†(Exodus 3: 12).
The living God's rational words reminded the Hebrews of what they knew first hand. God's Words were not delivered in a trance-state but were rather empirically verifiable, for example, by the death of Egypt's first-born, the parting of the Red Sea and drowning of Pharoah and his army, water out of a Rock and Manna from heaven.
As Mangalwadi points out, for the Jews, first-hand experience lived within history confirmed Revelation:
"On Mount Sinai, the Hebrews heard God corporately, just as the Apostles heard the words from heaven, “This is my beloved son.†No one asked the Hebrews to blindly believe a prophet. They knew Who their deliverer was through His wonderful works in their history and through His power over physical nature. God communicated in words because His works in nature and culture cannot always be understood unless He also explains them. Nor can His word be understood unless we also examine His works. Human communication works exactly the same way: words and works explain and confirm each other." (Vishal Mangalwadi, revelationmovement)
The living God confirmed His Word--His Truth---by His empirically verifiable works, and He commands His children not to believe what is false, such as secularism and its' primary doctrine evolution. The living God created ex nihilo, and made all men in His own spiritual image, and one of their chief purposes here in this world is to seek and to know the truth.
John summarized what he saw, heard, touched, and handled,
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory . . . full of grace and Truth . . . For the Law was given through Moses; grace and Truth came through Jesus Christ†(John 1: 14 & 17).
The Lord Jesus God incarnate asked skeptics to believe his words because of empirically observable works that demonstrated who He was. (John 5:35–37; 10:25 & 37–38; 14:11–12)
Jews and then Christians believed because God's Words were empirically observable and testable.
The Psalmist says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.†(19:1). To know His truth, said Mangalwadi, we must read "both the book of God’s words as well as the book of God’s works. To the Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection, Jesus said, 'You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God' (Matthew 22:28–30)."
Paul agrees with the Psalmist, “. . . what may be known of God is manifest in them [the pagans], for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead . . .†(Romans 1:19).
All non-Biblical religions are based on personal mystical encounters, stories, and myths while Jesus Christ sent out “witnesses†(truth-tellers) to transform their world. And so Peter assured the believers that he and other apostles “did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty†(2 Peter 1:16).
In November 1944, Oxford’s Socratic Club invited C. S. Lewis to speak to them on the topic, “Is Theology Poetry?" Oxford's secularists assumed that God's Revelation was but myth and story. Lewis, who was an expert on ancient myths and stories, shocked them when he explained that while Christianity dealt with truth, Oxford’s secular cosmology, which assumed that matter alone was real, was a myth. Secularism's pseudo-scientific evolutionary myth explained nothing – not even science, said Lewis. On the other hand, Christianity shed real light on tough questions. Biblical theology, said Lewis, had explained arts and science, myth, morality and what is wrong with man for centuries. It had guided Europe in matters of meaning, value, and the purpose of life – individual, family, and national.
Lewis pointed out that the new academic myth that only this material world is real (the mythical cosmology that matter is the ultimate reality) but the living God Who exists outside of this world is imaginary, had already admitted that it could not even account for the origin of life and matter anymore than it could explain why random chemical processes in our brains should be trusted to lead us to truth.
Lewis described secularism's “scientific cosmology†and “universal evolutionism†as “myths†which his contemporary, D. M. S. Watson, the Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at University College, London (1921 to 1951) had admitted publicly. Watson confessed that evolution,
“. . . is accepted by zoologists not because it has been observed to occur or . . . can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true, but because the only alternative, special creation, is clearly incredible.†(revelationmovement)
In his concluding remarks, Lewis said that in accepting Christian Theology I may find difficulties but, "I (nevertheless) believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else.â€
In other words, God's Revelation to man is like the Sun, it is empirically observable while evolutionism and the mythical cosmology that matter is the ultimate reality explain nothing, not life, not matter, not even science.
The Faithful have forgotten that the Word of God is before all else the Truth on which faith builds its' home. And so the sun is setting on America and the West because without God's divine revelation it is left with little besides a dangerous mix of amazing human hubris grounded in ignorance, worthless myths, stories, and ingenuity.
