"They hate me without a cause....they that would destroy me, are mine enemies falsely, (and being powerful).... I restored that which I took not." Psalm 69:4 Here the psalmist describes how idolatrous pagan's decided for themselves what the causes of suffering and evil are. In this instance the hater is a man whose soul is demonically occluded by idolatry of self, covetousness and envy whose "suffering" is occasioned by the spiritual, physical or temporal possessions of the innocent man. To alleviate his suffering the idolater projects his own ill will and evil intentions onto the innocent man so as to find the innocent man guilty of "causing" his "suffering." The malcontent then proceeds to psychologically bully the innocent man, which in its more passive forms may take the shape of shaming, whining and complaining, until the innocent man alleviates the 'suffering' of the envious pagan by "restoring that which he took not."
When the spiritual and physical attributes of the innocent man are deemed the "cause" of the idolater's suffering, then nothing less than the spiritual and physical murder of the innocent man will suffice to appease the idolater's ressentiment. In other words, by merely being who and what he is the innocent man "causes" the evil man to suffer as his very existence is a reproach to the self-idolater.
In the minds of ancient pagans the causes of evil and suffering were always unseen forces of nature external to man even though they worked within man himself. In his "Confessions," St. Augustine tells us that astrologers routinely transferred the cause of man's own wickedness--his pride, envy, covetousness, hate, and other sins--- onto the stars and planets and their Creator:
"Venus was responsible here, or Saturn or Mars. As though man, who is flesh and blood and proud corruption, should be guiltless and the guilt should be laid upon the creator and ruler of heaven and of the stars...." (The Confessions of Saint Augustine, translation by Rex Warner, p. 58)
This self-deceptive reasoning goes back to ancient Sumeria, to some 5,000 years before Christ. In his impeccably researched book, "Death by Envy: The Evil Eye and Envy in the Christian Tradition," Fr. George R.A. Aquaro writes that amidst the many thousands of ancient clay tablets are several prayers for warding off the Evil Eye. This superstitious belief eventually spread over time,
"...to the later Babylonians and all the peoples of the 'Fertile Crescent' of Mesopotamia....by the time of (the) writing of the Old Testament books, the Evil Eye is a well-developed belief and ingrained in the cultures of the Near East." (p. 4)
Scripture combines envy with jealousy, covetousness and selfishness into a single concept that is a manifestation of idolatry of self. The depravity of the envious is that they desire good things in an evil way. If for example, one man resents the deserved praise and recognition of another, he is envious and thus in denial that it is God Who provides for all and has universal ownership of all things, including the attributes and personal property of the one who is the object of the envious man's ill will.
With most early Church Fathers the centrality of envy to Satan and the fallen condition of man made envy a major theological concept. With some Fathers, envy was a form of Primordial Sin, making envy and death the same thing.
The devil and his angels had already been cast out of heaven into the lower realm because of their pride and envy, which now turned upon man. Church Father Ambrose writes that the devil envied the happiness of Adam and Eve in Paradise and desired above all things their harm:
"The devil began to reflect that man was an inferior creature, yet had hopes of an eternal life, whereas he, a creature of superior nature, had fallen and had become part of this mundane existence." (Genesis, Creation and Early Man, Fr. Seraphim Rose, p. 255)
The devil's temptation ultimately succeeded because of Adam's own desire. St. Ephraim writes:
"the tempting word would not have led into sin those who were tempted if the tempter had not been guided by their own desire....they were harmed more by their own desire than by the counsel of the serpent." (ibid, p. 257)
When God asks Adam and Eve to confess their sin (Gen.3:10-13) they respond not with humble repentance but with stiff-necked pride, self-justification and transference of their own sin onto each other, the serpent and finally onto God Himself, a repetitive pattern of behavior followed in whole or part by proud men right up to our own time.
Church Father Irenaeus of Lyons connects the envy of the Jews and the devil in the Gospel with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He also posits that Yahweh rejected Cain's sacrifice because his heart was divided with self-idolatry, malice and envy.
For St. Irenaeus, apostasy is motivated by envy:
"Just as if any one, being an apostate, and seizing in a hostile manner another man's territory, should harass the inhabitants of it, in order that he might claim for himself the glory of a king among those ignorant of his apostasy and robbery; so likewise also the devil, being one among those angels who are placed over the spirit of the air, as the Apostle Paul has declared in his Epistle to the Ephesians, becoming envious of man, was rendered an apostate from the divine law: for envy is a thing foreign to God." (Against Heresies, Book 5)
During the time of the Church Fathers, one way in which apostates claimed glory for themselves among those ignorant of their apostasy was by dehistoricizing the book of Genesis, a heresy common to our own age. Those who de-historicize Genesis so as to conform it with evolutionary thinking contradict and deny the Divine Redeemer, and this is the essence of unfaithfulness. Such men do not help men to find God but to lose Him.
Justin Martyr states that envy makes men turn to idols, which are nothing but symbols of men's pride and selfish desires. Idolatry and pride are associated with envy since the proud man makes an idol out of himself and his selfish desires, thus in the "Life of Moses" St. Gregory of Nyssa calls envy,
"The passion which causes evil, the father of death, the first entrance for sin, the root of wickedness, the birth of sorrow, the mother of misfortune, the basis of disobedience, the beginning of shame. Envy banished us from Paradise (and) made Joseph a slave. Envy is the death-dealing sting, the hidden weapon, the sickness of nature, the bitter poison, the self-willed emaciation, the bitter dart, the nail of the soul, the fire in the heart, the flame burning inside..." (Death by Envy, p. 74)
St. Cyprian (circa 250 AD) lists the many envy passages in Scripture: Abel and Cain, Jacob and Esau, David and Saul, and finally Christ and the Jews and equates envy with self-destruction as the envious struggle against their brethren with homicidal intentions. In the Soviet Union the spirit of envy murdered in excess of sixty-million brethren. Around thirty million were Christians.
In modern times, God-haters such as Comte, Karl Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Lenin, Stalin, and death of God theologians must be added to this list. Additionally, they and countless numbers of self-worshipping envy-fueled antitheist and atheist humanist conspirators are guilty of undermining and destroying the foundations of Christendom and Protestant America.
Envy is the malignant spirit energizing Universal Evolution, philosophical materialism/naturalism, Communism, Socialism, Secular Humanism, progressive liberalism and other ideological humanist derivatives, and this is why living, supernatural God has been "murdered" and replaced by one of the major symbols of atheist humanism's idolatry---universal evolution:
“In the evolutionary pattern of thought there is no longer either need or room for the supernatural. The earth was not created, it evolved. So did all the animals and plants…including our human selves, mind and soul as well as brain and body. So did religion.†( Sir Julian Huxley, speaker at the University of Chicago’s Darwin Centennial, 1959, cited in "Genesis, Creation, and Early Man," Fr. Seraphim Rose, p. 23)
In short, the triumph of Darwinism implied the death of God and Original Sin, thus setting the stage for replacing Biblical theism with a neo-pagan faith based on evolutionary naturalism. With the return of paganism self-idolatrous man is freed to once more fall back into the self-deceptive behavior of transferring the cause of his own evil and suffering onto external sources--such as guns---as well as onto those whose very existence is a reproach.
The triumph of evolutionary thinking together with naturalism is the triumph of heresy draining inevitably into the apostasy that is a manifestation of man's idolatry of self and envy.
It is in this light that we can finally make sense of the tsunami of insanity moving with great force and speed over our nation, destroying everything true and good in its' path. For instance, ressentiment fuels the global jihad being conducted by America's cultural atheist elites in secret alliance with our enemies--jihadis---against Western civilization. (U.S. Policy Defending Sharia, Not American Citizens, Claire Lopez, http://www.radicalislam.org/analysis/us-policy-defending-sharia-not-american-citizens
It is ressentiment's most devilishly secret aspect--Schadenfreude--that rejoices at our misfortunes and desires above all things the immolation of the West and America. This is because when idolatry of self, covetousness, and envy swell up to the point where men seek to murder God, another spirit-- the dread spirit of envy---compels them in their madness to immolate their own people (fellow Americans and Westerners) and burn down the created order, in this case America and the West.
