"In the God Gene I propose that spirituality has a biological mechanism akin to birdsong, albeit a far more complex and nuanced one." Behavior geneticist Dean Hamer (The Spiritual Brain, Beauregard, Ph.D., & O'Leary, p. 48) Like the ancient Greek nature philosopher Epicurus, Dean Hamer is a materialist. Materialism is a this-worldy monistic philosophy that assumes that only one substance, matter, exists. Thus it seeks to explain all of reality, from the cosmos and subatomic quarks to the workings of the human mind (psychology) and the existence of evil in terms of organic reality, that is, genes and chemicals.
Hence Adam Lanza's homicidal rage was caused by an evil gene, sodomy is the result of a 'gay' gene and belief in God is an illusion caused by a "biological mechanism," or bad gene.
Until the last sixty years or so American culture strongly reflected the fundamental Biblical conviction that the living, personal, supernatural God created man in His own spiritual image but due to Original Sin (abuse of moral agency) all men are fallen and further that God put fallen men here on this beautiful planet where we, alone among all creatures, are given the spiritual ability (moral agency or will) to choose between moral good and moral evil, thereby choosing our eternal destiny....paradise or outer darkness.
In this view, every man is both kindly Dr. Jekyll and evil Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll stands for honesty, kindness, charity, courage, hope, respect, generosity, friendship, love, truth, compassion, humility, faith and salvation:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Galatians 5: 22-25
Mr. Hyde is our dark side, our fallen sin nature, thus he represents pride, anger, bitterness, rage, hate, hypocrisy, contempt, disrespect, defiance, rebellion, envy, lust, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, lies, vengeance, treachery, betrayal, cruelty, murder, addiction and damnation.
Addiction to the bad behaviors arising from our dark side includes everything from narcissism and pathological lying and cheating to sexual pathologies such as pedophilia, pederasty, sodomy and lesbianism to habitual use of drugs, porn, alcohol, and gambling:
"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." Galatians 5:19-21
Fifty years ago we still knew that a habitual life of sin not only transforms us into Mr. Hyde (slaves of sin) but keeps us from becoming the sons and daughters God intended for us in the beginning of creation. When through habitual abuse of free will we become slaves of sin, we are more like the beasts than like spiritual beings created in the spiritual image of God, endowed by Him with intelligence, conscience and free will.
But that was then. Today Hamer's materialist assumptions are shared by America's cultural elite from jurists to academia, Hollywood insiders, media, politicians, law-makers, 'gay' rights activists and those in medicine and psychiatry.
Philosophical materialists do not think of man in spiritual terms of soul/spirit---conscience, higher mental abilities, free will, morality, character, and self-understanding but rather as soulless animals---beasts whose politically incorrect 'bad thoughts' and 'bad behavior' problems are genetic and chemical in origin. They are "mental illnesses" manageable with psychotropic drugs.
Are you addicted to compulsive anger and hate? Are you a walking volcano looking for any reason to explode? You suffer from, "intermittent explosive disorder."
Are you proud, defiant and hostile toward any and all authority, including that of your parents? You could be suffering from a mental illness known as "oppositional defiant disorder."
Are you addicted to worry? You most likely suffer from "generalized anxiety disorder."
What about 'road rage,' does it cause you to suffer? You are mentally ill with something called, "aggressive driving disorder."
Are you a fidgety little boy who squirms and wriggles because you don't like being shut up in a classroom all day? Like millions of babies and children, you suffer from "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder."
Are you a pathological liar, serial adulterer, a cheating jerk? You have a mental illness called anti-social personality disorder. (How Evil Works, David Kupelian, p. 105)
Today everything bad and outright evil, from pathological lying, murderous fantasies, disrespect, contempt, covetousness, gluttony (i.e., hoarding), temper tantrums, promiscuity, serial adultery, drunkenness, shoplifting, homicidal rage, drug abuse and road rage is genetic and chemical and treated with psychotropic drugs that among other things, deactivate your conscience so you no longer have to suffer from a guilty conscience:
"Do you know what the Valium did for me? It deactivated my conscience." (Anonymous, Kupelian, p. 107)
Today nothing is your fault. You're just an innocent victim of your genes and chemical imbalances. What's more, the majority of us---Christian and non-Christian--- like it this way.
We are very agreeable to the idea that our Mr. Hyde-side amounts to organic disorders. We comfort ourselves in the idea that nothing is our fault, there's no personal sin, no bad decisions, and no character flaws on our part. Our over-inflated egos love this and demand more.
C.S. Lewis saw the importance of free moral agency, for the living, supernatural God ultimately honors our choices, whether for good or evil.
For all Americans, whether they call themselves Christian, atheist, skeptic, humanist or free-thinker, the choice of pride and self-centeredness means they are unwisely rejecting the God of Revelation and His offer of Paradise. By their own choice, they are shutting themselves out of eternal paradise. So Lewis makes this point, saying that in the end, Hell is of their choosing:
"There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.' All that are in Hell chose it."
