Jeremiah & the Spiritual Catastrophe Occuring in America & the West

Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott--one of the victims of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado--was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What this courageous man said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. But in our age of neo-pagan evolutionary humanism his remarks were not well received. Guns were not responsible for Rachel's murder, said Scott. Evil does not reside within a mystical force emanating from guns, as contemporary progressive materialist and pantheist New Age pagans hold, but in man himself. Since the dawn of creation, said Scott:

"...there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence...The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart."

Columbine was not just a temporal event but a spiritual event that,

"...should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves."

In one of his most profoundly important observations, Scott briefly details the consequences to human beings when they no longer know that they are the three-part spiritual image-bearers of the living, supernatural Triune God:

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc."

Man is a soul fully embedded within a material body. The citadel of soul is spirit---mind, conscience and will. The Bible sometimes speaks of men as souls, at other times as fleshy spirits. Man's brain is like a marvelous computer through which soul/spirit reasons, wills (i.e., I will do this or will not do this), and otherwise interacts within the material world.

God is Spirit. His first created beings were spirits--angels, powers, principalities. And since man is also soul/spirit it is possible for him to be influenced, oppressed and even possessed by higher order spirits:

"(Angels) are spiritual soldiers in the great cosmic jihad, the spiritual war between Good and Evil. That war seems to be coming to a head or making a fundamental turn right now, exactly at the time when most of our religious teachers have stopped talking about this fundamental biblical theme for the first time in thousands of years. Just when the enemy (Satan and his legion of fallen angels) is making a great counterattack, we start forgetting we're on a battlefield at all!" (Angels and Demons, Peter Kreeft, p. 19)

What has caused us to forget both that we are souls/spirits and that a great spiritual battle rages all around us? In their book, "Authenticating the Activities of Jesus" Bruce Chilton and Craig A. Evans point out that with the triumph of natural science and philosophically materialist Darwinism in the nineteenth century Westerners and Americans were eventually cut off from their supernatural Creator, heaven, hell, angels and their own souls/spirits, thereby disrupting:

"...the bio-psycho-spiritual unity of human consciousness...." (Authenticating the Activities of Jesus, Bruce Chilton and Craig A. Evans, 1999)

In other words, if Darwinism is true, then man is a soulless, mindless bag of chemicals or perhaps an equally soulless, mindless hominid, a beast-man qualitatively no different from a rat, pig, or ape.

The modern secular "scientistic" West has almost succeeded in obliterating the souls/spirits of its' citizens and now seeks obliteration of the two sexes:

"Little Johnny went to school; There to learn a brand new rule; No longer could the boys be boys/Or have their special trucks and toys; Only six, so young and tender/ It's time for him to unlearn gender." (Here At School the Slant is Gay, cited in Our Gay Pride President, David A. Noebel, worldview weekend)

In "Generation LGBTQIA," the New York Times reports:

"There’s a very different generation of people coming of age, with completely different conceptions of gender and sexuality,” said Jack Halberstam (formerly Judith), a transgender professor at the University of Southern California and the author, most recently, of “Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal.” "When you see terms like L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.,” Professor Halberstam added, “it’s because people are seeing all the things that fall out of the binary, and demanding that a name come into being.” "And with a plethora of ever-expanding categories like “genderqueer” and “androgyne” to choose from, each with an online subculture, piecing together a gender identity can be as D.I.Y. as making a Pinterest board." ("Generation LGBTQIA," Michael Schulman, NYTs, Jan.9, 2013)

And then there's this:

"Soros-funded group suing Pastor Scott Lively for "crimes against humanity" in Federal Court. Punishing him for Christian, pro-family position on homosexuality." (Huge gay lawsuit vs pro-family pastor in Federal Court this Monday, MassResistance, Jan. 4, 2013)

The Christian Truth which has been undermined and displaced by natural science and evolutionary thinking developed as ideology and natural religion was no mere philosophical truth but the Truth of Creation, of Life, of man's created being, and of salvation:

"The essence of the human is not the body, but the soul. It is the soul alone that God made in his own image and the soul that he loves....For the sake of the soul...the Son of God came into the world...." (Incomplete Work on Matthew, Homily 25, Ancient Christian Devotional, Oden and Crosby, p. 153)

In his profoundly insightful book, "Nihilism: The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age," visionary Eugene Rose foresees massive spiritual catastrophe once there begins to gain ground,

"... among the multitudes who have been nourished by that Truth, the conviction that it is no longer credible, the result will be...a spiritual catastrophe of enormous dimensions." (Nihilism: The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age, Eugene Rose, pp. 44-45)

Nihilism: A Spiritual Catastrophe

Evolutionary thinking has finally saturated the West and America with the result that the foundations of supernatural Christianity and man’s soul/spirit have been destroyed.

Non-belief in one's own soul/spirit and created condition as either male or female results in spiritual emptiness or nihilism, the logical assumption if the transcendent Triune God does not exist.

Nihilism is spiritual, moral, and intellectual suicide, yet for the last two hundred years, Enlightenment evolutionary humanists (i.e., positivists, secular humanists, progressive liberals, Marxists) and their modern naturalist counterparts such as occult pantheist New Agers and Trans-humanists have been moving the West and America closer and closer to denial of man's soul/spirit in favor of materialist (soulless bag of chemicals) and pantheist conceptions.

Ken Wilber, a Mahayana Buddhist from a Christian background provides us with a pantheist conception with his "integral spirituality." A popular author whose teachings have been avidly studied by world leaders, politicians (i.e. Bill Clinton and Al Gore), scholars, writers, artists, musicians, spiritual teachers and pop culture icons, Wilber combines evolution with the world's nature religions and Eastern and Western nature philosophy so as to establish a universal spirituality grounded in the pantheist idea that a spark or bit of divine spirit is in ourselves and in the universe around us.

A panentheist, Wilber imagines that the entire universe is God evolving from matter through billions of years toward Teilhard de Chardin's 'Omega Point.' Having evolved from primordial soup beast-man now evolves upward toward total god-consciousness, and in this way, the imaginary god is in process of 'becoming' while evolution becomes conscious of itself.

A form of New Age Christianized-Vedanta monism is already here, said Dr. Peter Jones:

"Evolutionary Christianity" is producing the longed-for and much-prophesied synthesis, namely, the union of science and spirituality.... Evolutionary Christianity is a variant of Wilber's 'Theory of Everything,' a worldview of (Vedanta monism) that claims to explain everything through the notion of human evolution into a non-dual (neither male nor female but androgynous) divine. Michael Dowd, the ex-Evangelical now evangelist for evolution (agrees) with Bishop's Spong's post-theistic Christianity (and) declares supernatural other-worldly religion will die out for a post-metaphysical natural religion."

Jones adds that Evolutionary Christianity is an online gathering place for:

"....evangelical theistic evolutionists, 'progressive' Emergent Christian leaders, radical post-theistic Christian liberals, Christian non-dual mystics, pro-homosexual ministers, radical religious feminists, and recognized evolutionary scientists. Some are deeply influenced by Pierre Teillard de Chardin, and pagan "geologians" such as Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme."

Yet another example of New Age pantheist nature religion is taught by Emergent Church Pastor Rob Bell. Bell enthusiastically endorses Ken Wilber and claims to be reinventing Christianity as an Eastern religion while evangelical leader Leonard Sweet uses quantum physics to 'scientifically' prove that God is 'in' everything. Not surprisingly, Sweet cites Teilhard de Chardin as "20th century Christianity's major voice." (Normalizing Necromancy: Tempting the Church to Talk with the Dead, Worldview Weekend, 1/23/12)

However, nihilism underlies all permutations of evolutionary thinking, secular ideology, nature religion and New Age pagan spirituality, whether 20th century's Communist Marxism and Fascism or today's Evolutionary Christianity, Theosophy and higher-level Masonry, Gnosticism, pagan mythology, Jungian Depth Psychology, Interfaith, Trans-humanism, Wicca, Scientology, Goddess worship, and the spiritual 'gay' agenda, for all of the aforementioned are naturalistic. All are equally God-less; none have a source for life, consciousness, and soul/spirit, hence all are merely different expressions of nihilism.

For over two hundred years, nihilist philosophies have been working their way through our culture, embedding themselves often unconsciously within our psyches. This means that not only is the way we see ourselves and America colored by nihilism, but to the degree that our minds have been polluted are we immobilized by apathy, the spiritual emptiness that says in reaction to our peculiarly twisted, degraded culture, "Why bother?'

The satanically twisted, perverse atmosphere of our age is the "death of God" made tangible and it is Nietzsche who describes our meaningless, disordered, ugly, atonal, brutal, upside-down climate of nothingness:

"We have killed him (God), you and I! ...But how have we done it? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the whole horizon? What did we do when we loosened this earth from its sun? Whither does it now move? Whither do we move? ...Do we not dash on unceasingly? Backwards, sideways, forwards, in all directions? Is there still an above and below? Do we not stray...through infinite nothingness? Does not empty space breathe upon us? ...Does not night come on continually, darker and darker?" (Nihilism: The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age, Eugene Rose, p. 108)

Such is the theater of the absurd in which the Satanic values of personal selfishness, physical lust and hate declare the non-existence of moral absolutes, accountability, direction, rules, restraints, discipline and truth. Thus there is neither up nor down, male nor female, right nor wrong, true nor false, normal nor abnormal, holy nor unholy because the living God is dead.

America and the West are desperately, mortally sick. But because the pathogen is spiritual, politics, laws, gun control laws, psychotropic drugs, and further authoritarian restrictions are completely useless, for when the Holy Triune God disappears, only the despair of nihilism remains.

In his book, "Death in the City," Francis Schaeffer argues that Jeremiah is the prophet for our own age. Jeremiah’s message of forthcoming Judgment (1:14, 5:15) was not an easy one. Like Darrell Scott's testimony, Jeremiah's message was not well-received by a church and culture in revolt. Because egoistic men do not want to hear unpleasant, disturbing messages they persecute, shun, and crucify the bearers of them.

But Jeremiah's attitude, his courage, and perseverance in the face of persecution must be ours, said Schaeffer:

“When we see men ignore or pervert the truth of God, we must say clearly—not in hate or anger—’You are wrong.”

Schaeffer makes clear that when the church does not speak against the prevailing apostasy, nihilism, heresies, lying and other sins in our post-Christian society it does not follow God’s example through Jeremiah.

In an age such as ours, a church that says that heaven, hell, angels and man's soul/spirit exist and that there really is eternally unchanging Truth, Moral Law, meaning, purpose and accountability for sin is saying that the living God really is there. And further, the church that truly lives by its’ stated beliefs, is a church that demonstrates that it really believes He is there.
