Take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness, Luke 11:35

"...the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." 1 John 5:19 In 1974 the Journal of Christian Reconstruction published Rousas John Rushdoony's article,'Power from Below,' a penetrating analysis of modern naturalism (neo-paganism). He wrote that modern philosophy,

"....beginning with Descartes ... led to Darwin and the doctrine of evolution. This doctrine [militated] against any higher world. Power from above was thus eliminated from the universe, in both its Christian and its pagan versions. ... modern man became involved in a desperate search for power from below. [This quest] also became political, and a new breed of leaders from below began to dominate the twentieth century - Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and their paler counterparts in the democracies.... The result has been the rise of magic, witchcraft, Satanism, and related interests. Satanism is not new, and its past history is an ugly one, but the new Satanism is the most vicious yet, and potentially the most dangerous. Power from below ... is thus very much a part of modern man's faith. ... We can only expect, until this faith is shattered, a steady intensification of violence, crime, and revolution. ..." (The Journal of Christian Reconstruction, I, 2, pp.7-10).

In other words, two schools of neo-pagan thought united in their hatred toward the supernatural God---Cosmic Humanism (i.e., Theosophy, Protestant Liberalism) and Secular Humanism (i.e., Free Masonry,'scientific' materialism)--appeared in Western history in the heart of Christendom during the Enlightenment. The tap root of both schools stretches back to the Renaissance which had reawakened a magic view of the world closely connected with pagan Gnostic sectarianism, Eastern pantheism, Hermetic magic, spiritism, Greek Atomism (materialism) as well as alchemical-scientism. Along with all of this came spiritual evolution, reincarnation, karma and occultism.

These two schools were not enemies in principle but rather cooperating philosophies united against the "higher world"---the transcendent Creator Who exists outside of the space/time dimension.

In 1884, Pope Leo XIII issued a famous bull entitled Humanum Genus in which he discussed the evil intentions and undertakings of these two cooperating philosophies:

"...the partisans of evil seems to be combining together, and to be struggling with united vehemence, led on or assisted by that strongly organized and widespread association called the Freemasons. No longer making any secret of their purposes, they are now boldly rising up against God Himself." They intend nothing less than "the utter overthrow of that whole religious and political order of the world which the Christian teaching has produced, and the substitution of a new state of things in accordance with their ideas (that) shall be drawn from mere naturalism." (Humanum Genus, Encyclical on Freemasonry)

By the nineteenth-century the first natural (pagan) religion of science emerged: scientific socialism and/or Marxist Communism.

Fyodor Dostoevsky had a bitter foretaste of the demonically malignant effects of scientific socialism, a spiritual catastrophe of enormous dimensions. This evil pagan religion said Dostoevsky:

"....is that terrible scourge of mankind, a scourge worse than plague, famine and war, an evil that didn't exist until this century... one that has its own priests and slaves; a tyrant that is worshipped with unprecedented awe and adulation before which science itself fawns and cringes." (The Restitution of Man: C.S. Lewis and the Case Against Scientism, Michael D. Aeschliman, p. 37)

But what scientific socialism aspired to be in completely reordering supernatural Christian-based Western society according to the principles of scientific naturalism, 20th century Fabians actually were.

Much if not most of what has gone wrong in Western Europe and here in America is attributable to the Fabians, who for the most part were lapsed Anglicans from Evangelical homes who became dignitaries in the Church of England:

“There was a Christian fringe to the London socialism of the eighties, but this too was Anglican. The Christian Socialists came together in Stewart Headlam’s Guild of St. Matthew and the Land Reform Union; and the more respectable Christian Social Union, formed in 1889 — seeking in Fabian style to permeate the Anglican Church — soon attracted more than two thousand clerical members. Dissenting clergymen too began to find a place in the Fabian Society and the London Progressives, while Unitarian churches and centres like Stanton Coit’s Ethical Church provided a meeting place for believers and idealist agnostics . . . Socialism was for all of them, the new Evangelism (and) Evolution or what (Sidney) Webb called Zeitgeist, had taken the place of Providence....” (Norman and Jeanne MacKenzie, The Fabians, Simon & Schuster, 1977, p. 18)

All aspects of spiritism intensely interested Progressive 'Christians.' Through various ghost/spiritist organizations such as the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) founded in 1887 they conducted scientific research into phenomena such as mesmeric trance, telepathy, clairvoyance, apparitions, haunted houses, seances, and all aspects of mediumism, or contact with spirits, to determine the scientific laws of physical and/or naturally occurring spiritistic phenomena. For them as for their pagan materialist counterparts, only the space/time dimension exists, hence all phenomenon must have a physical explanation, it must be a power from here below.

By the turn of the century Pope Pius X noted with alarm that 'Christian' progressive thinking was taking hold of the contemporary mind, and in that way taking possession of Western civilization, including Catholic laity and priests. The Pope defined progressive pantheism as "Modernism" and in 1907 declared it a heresy in the encyclical called 'Pascendi Dominici Gregis." (http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius10/p10pasce.htm)

The Pope noted that Progressive "Christian" heretics were claiming that Christ is in us (pantheist monism) and that through evolution an immanentist Christ-force progressed and/or "emanated from nature spontaneously and of itself." (ibid)

Since evolution (Zeitgeist) implies continuous change, becoming, and/or progress, "Christian" heretics claim that immutable (unchanging) truths and moral absolutes do not exist, therefore there is nothing immutable in the Bible or the Church....or for that matter in Americas' Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights and Rule of Law. All are subject to change, for in that a Christ-force has emerged spontaneously into nature, everything is infused with impersonal divine spirit, power, intent, determinism (fate), and motion. Thus claim heretics, religion itself lives and evolves, and "must in fact be changed."

In his brilliant critical analysis of Theosophy and spiritism (and by extension progressive Christian pantheism) entitled, "The Spiritist Fallacy" the respected traditionalist metaphysician Rene Guenon (1886-1951) writes that in early Theosophist and spiritist (mediums/channelers) circles use of the word 'progress' or 'progressivist' preceded the use of the word 'evolution.' The roots of Theosophy, hence of evolution, stretch back to the ancient Upanishads of India and to ancient Greece, and in its modern version, progress and/or evolution describes the progress (transmigration/reincarnation) of soul as it inhabits in succession the bodies of different kinds of lifeforms over the course of thousands or even millions and billions of years.

Eventually the word evolution became preferred, especially by empirical realists and materialists like Karl Marx because it had a more 'scientific' allure said Guenon:

"This kind of 'verbalism'...provides the illusion of thought for those incapable of really thinking..." (ibid, p. 231)

Guenon defines progress, progressivism, and evolution as satanic and adherents, whether they call themselves Christian or not, as unconscious Satanists because for the most part their hubris and ignorance blind them to the extreme dangers of the "infernal fire" they play with:

"..every theory that notably disfigures the Divinity should in some measure be regarded as satanic; and conceptions of a limited God and of a God who evolves should here be placed in the front rank...." Thus "evolutionism" in general and Modernist "conceptions" in particular are satanic. The 'immanentist' Christ-force of the Liberal Church is satanic because it "openly submits the Divinity to becoming." (ibid, p. 257)

Having eliminated the supernatural God from the universe, naturalists of both materialist and pantheist persuasions became involved in a desperate search for power here below. And made foolish by pride and ignorance they were blind to the extreme dangers of the "infernal fire" they played with. Sometime during 1919, lapsed Evangelical Christian Alice Bailey (1880-1949) had a first-hand encounter with "infernal fire" that eventually possessed her.

Bailey had become a member of Annie Besant's Theosophical Society. After she began receiving "messages" from "Tibetan Master" Djwhal Khul (a spirit being) in 1919 she left the Theosophical Society to found her own school of Theosophy. Speaking through Bailey, Khul said the apostasy, or coming struggle, would begin within the Church and then spread:

"The coming struggle will emerge within the churches themselves; it will be precipitated by the enlightened (progressive) elements...the fight will then spread to thinking men and women everywhere who — in a protesting revolt — have denied orthodox churchianity and theology." (Spirit Master Djwhal Khul speaking through Alice Bailey, Externalization of the Hierarchy, pp. 453-454)

Around the same time she married Foster Bailey (1888-1977), a 32nd Mason. Together they established Lucifer Publishing (now called Lucis Trust) in 1922 in New York City situated close to the United Nations as well as the Arcane School (1923) and World Goodwill (1932).

After her death Foster Bailey continued the work of Lucis Trust. Masonry said Bailey,

" is all that remains to us of the first world religion which flourished in an antiquity so old it is impossible to date. It was the first unified world religion...Today we are working again...towards a world universal religion" (False Dawn, Lee Penn, pp. 20-21)

Though the organized effort to overthrow and destroy the Old Order began with apostate Protestant liberal pantheists and lapsed Evangelicals, today as Khul foretold, the spirit of hubris, ignorance and change (heresy, apostasy, evolutionary thinking) has crept into the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Evangelical Church. In one way or another, the infection is spreading throughout the whole body of the Church causing it to stumble and fall after old mainline Protestant liberalism which has long since fallen into New Age 'One World' spirituality.

Lee Penn calls our attention to the United Religions Initiative, which to a significant extent is animated by New Age spirituality. Penn notes that evolution is absolutely central to New Age theology---a syncretistic stew of Protestant Liberal Christianity, Theosophy, Spiritism, the Ancient Mysteries, Wicca, Goddess worship, Gaia worship and adulation of Lucifer.

The URI has attracted a disparate group of activists and powerful transnational supporters. For example, the Dalai Lama, progressive churchmen from the People's Republic of China, pro-gay Episcopalians, radical Muslims, feminist witches, rich capitalist foundations, the Club of Rome, the Temple of Understanding and the Lucis Trust. Prominent supporters of the URI and globalism include occultist Robert Muller (former UN assistant secretary general), Neale Donald Walsh, George Soros, Mikhail Gorbachev, Maurice Strong, Ted Turner, and Barbara Marx Hubbard. (pp.5,7, 23-26)

New Age spirituality relies heavily on spirit revelations channeled through Helena Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, Muller, Marx Hubbard, and Neale Donald Walsh. Penn notes that all together they form a comprehensive anti-Gospel setting forth a progressive vision of spiritualized totalitarianism that includes:

1. Praise for Lucifer as the light-bearer and giver of wisdom.

2. Proclaiming that we humans are gods and that death is not real

3. Advocacy for extreme population control, including abortion, eugenics and euthanasia

4. Utter contempt for traditional religions — with concentrated scorn directed at faithful Judaism, evangelical Protestantism and Roman Catholicism.

5. Forecasting a pending (and for them, desirable) "selection" of mankind, in which the progressives enter the New Age and the reactionaries face extinction. For the New Age Apostles of "progressive" Social Darwinism, these casualties are a necessary price to pay for human evolution." (ibid, p. 7)

Today discerning people see that the very idea of morality, meaning, purpose, and tradition has been destroyed to such an extent that those who seek to recover it no longer know which way to turn and are only too ready to accept all the false ideas presented to them in its place and under its name. A mixing of Biblical truths with false gospels, evolutionary cosmogonies, moral relativism and New Age ideas are resulting in spiritual confusion and apostasy over and across the entire denominational spectrum. The need for faithful Biblical teaching and discernment is greater than ever before:

"...take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.?” Luke 11:35

Dr. Albert Mohler agrees. People no longer know what they have lost, much less that they themselves are lost,

"The landscape is changing, the skies are darkening — and this is something we know with a... spiritual sense, a spiritual urgency." (Albert Mohler, The Disappearance of God, p. 158)
